Fashion Watch - Victory Day in Provincial Ukraine

Small-town Ukriane, like small towns everywhere I guess, doesn’t have much to feel good about, especially in these crisis times. Yet the Soviet victory over the Nazis on May 9 is a reason for celebration, even though Western Ukrainians might say that just as many died fighting against Stalin. In Nikolayev though, a port city north of the Crimea, such debates are seen as academic. Most people here were resettled from northern Russia in the late 18th century when the town was created to house workers from the shipbuilding yards nearby. It has a reputation for having the ‘most beautiful women in Ukraine’ because Catherine the Great supposedly sent the best prostitutes from Russia there to make the workers happy so they could build bigger and better ships faster.
Still anchored to mother Russia, the residents came out in force to celebrate that great victory over 60 years ago, parading down the main pedestrian street, Sovietskaya, that culminates in a giant statue of Lenin! Has anything changed since those halcyon days of state Communism? Fashion-wise too, the city seems stuck in the late 80s.
