Homoerotic Electro – Poland’s Dick4Dick

Sometimes wearing quirky suits is enough to lift a band’s image from ordinary indie rock to something more psychedelic and memorable – think Electric Six, Franz Ferdinand and The (International) Noise Conspiracy.

Polish band Dick4Dick achieve the same effect by dressing down. They’re known for stripping off while performing live – or for any reason at all, really.

It would be too easy to write off this manic four-piece (each with their dick-related psydonyms) as a juvenile gimmick act, but the truth is their music is just too cool to ignore. It’s a glammy soup of danceable rock’n’roll that drives audiences wild. Listening to their tunes while online at work can lead to an embarassing bout of head nodding and seat grooving that may require later explanation to your co-workers.

Dick4Dick have just the right mix of steaming masculinity, suggestive homoerotic antics and on-stage charisma to captivate any crowd. Just wait to ’til the west gets a look at ’em.

Interview by – Joel Alas – joel@beastnation.com

B EAST: If a psychologist tried to analyze your obsession with dicks, what conclusion would he come to, and would it be correct?

Dick4Dick: The dick for us is a symbol. If somebody goes through his life like a millionaire with love and happiness and an open mind, you could say “He’s the DICK”. Sometimes if you are doing things that you don’t like and somebody tells you what to do and you are unhappy with that, you can say that you have dick in your ass permanently. We are in that first category, so we are DICKS. Let the psycholgist take note of that and make them tell it to everybody.

B EAST: Does your band’s name bring you more male or female fans?

Of course we are playing for everybody, but near the stage we can see a lot of girls in the front line. They are screaming, touching us, throwing pants on the stage and after the show backstage they tell us some ugly stories about their boyfriends. We like it.

B EAST: We love the tunes! What did you listen to while dreaming up that soup of glammy dirty rock?

While making the first album we were listening mainly to electronic music. These days it’s mostly classic rock stars like Led Zeppelin or the Beatles, a lot of weird stuff like Animal Collective, Robert Wyatt, Frank Zappa, Sun Ra and so on.

You can throw away all that guitar stuff like indie-dance-punk-rock. Every second album of those sorts of artists shows a big emptiness in their artistic lifes.

B EAST: What do you associate the color ‘red’ with? And what would the psychologist have to say about your answer?

Bobby Dick: I have a red guitar and I’ve just bought a red bass. My kitchen furniture is red, my doors are red, my carpet is red, and my balls recently became red.
Nygga Dick: When I was younger I was communist.
Wet Dick JR: I have red hair, and everyday I paint my lips this color.
Dick Dexter: After the show my whole body is red, and only my heels are yellow-brown.
The Psychologist: You are walking on the thin red line guys.

B EAST: What is your favorite red item? I see one of you has a red guitar….

Bobby Dick: Yeaaaaaah man!
Nygga Dick: So folks, when I was younger I was COMMUNIST.
Wet Dick JR: Haven’t I answered this? I don’t remember.
Dick Dexter: My blood on your lips.

The Psychologist: I think our hour is up.

B EAST: Have you ever been on the red carpet?

Bobby Dick: Yeeaaaaaah man!

Nygga Dick: I did when I was communist.
Wet Dick JR: 1,2,3,4,5…. Where is my lipstick?
Dick Dexter: Not only “on”.

B EAST: When will the rest of the world get to see your sweaty bare torsos? Or will they have to come to Poland to watch you?

Oh! Very soon, after we release our second album. Besides, we have already shown our naked bodies in Germany, Russia, UK and Czech. But for now you should come to our beautiful, full-of-chaos country to see us on the stage.

Listen to their provocative track ‘Drink My Kefir’ here (For those who don’t know, Kefir is a Slavic version of buttermilk!)
